What are Special Educational Needs?

Special Educational Needs, or SEN, is a term that is used to describe pupils whose learning difficulty or disability calls for provision which is different from, or additional to, that normally available for pupils of the same age. These needs may include support with one or more of these
areas of development; communication and interaction; cognition and learning; social, emotional and mental health; and sensory and/or physical. These additional needs may exist for a short time or throughout a child's educational life. An individual child's special needs may be identified before a child has been entered school or they may come to be recognised at a specific point in
their education.
